Learn about the 4 types of injection: intradermal, subcutaneous, intravenous and intramuscular injections, and what they are used for in Singapore.
The best areas on your body to give yourself a SQ injection are: Upper arms. At least 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) below your shoulder and 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) above your elbow, on the side or back. Outer side of upper thighs. Belly area.
There are four sites on your body that can be used to give yourself an intramuscular injection. These include the upper arm, thigh, hip, and buttocks.
The most common complication of a subcutaneous injection is pain near the injection site for 1 to 2 days afterward. Pain near the injection site can happen when inserting the needle at the wrong angle, or when it moves slightly during the injection.
Sites for subcutaneous injections include the outer lateral aspect of the upper arm, the abdomen (from below the costal margin to the iliac crest and more than two inches from the umbilicus), the anterior upper thighs, the upper back, and the upper ventral gluteal area.
Based on these three conditions, deltoid, ventrogluteal, and thigh sites are considered to be safe and, thus, commonly used for IM injections. The deltoid site has been used in clinical settings and is preferred in Japan because it is easily accessible for clinicians and also for patients to expose.
IM injections are administered in five potential sites: deltoid (commonly used for adult vaccinations), dorsogluteal, ventrogluteal, rectus femoris, and vastus lateralis3,10,11 (Figure 1).
The four most frequently used types of injection are: Intravenous (IV) injections. An IV injection is the fastest way to inject a medication and involves using a syringe to inject a medication directly into a vein. Intramuscular (IM) injections. Subcutaneous (SC) injections. Intradermal (ID) injections.
