Next, your doctor will likely use a plastic or metal-hinged tool called a speculum to spread open the walls of the vagina. This allows your doctor to see the vagina and cervix. The speculum is shaped like a ducks bill. It might be warmed before its inserted to make it more comfortable for you.
A speculum is a device a healthcare provider uses to examine hollow openings in your body, like your vagina, anus, ears or nostrils. The vaginal speculum used during pelvic exams is probably the most well-known type.
