Each user thread (pthread) has a kernel thread called a light-weight process (LWP). Inside the kernel, both processes and threads are implemented as LWPs, and are served the same by the scheduler.
(Library for World Wide Web in Perl) A suite of class libraries and software modules for the Perl programming language that is used to automate Web pages. LWP is commonly used to parse data from HTML pages.
LWP and the associated modules are available in various distributions free from the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network (CPAN). The main distributions are listed at the start of Appendix A, LWP Modules, although the details of which modules are in which distributions change occasionally.
LWP::UserAgents default timeout is 180 seconds.
Modules might also be used to mixin methods (DBIx::Class) or be a pragma (strict.pm) which has an effect immediately upon being loaded. Modules can even be used to alter the syntax of the language. The effect of Perl modules are usually limited to the current scope in which it was loaded.
$0. Contains the name of the file containing the perl script being executed. Assigning to $0 modifies the argument area that the ps(1) program sees. (Mnemonic: same as sh and ksh.)
