PAP, or password authentication protocol, is a point-to-point protocol (PPP) authentication method that uses passwords to validate users. It is an internet standard (RFC 1334), password-based authentication protocol. Using PAP, data is not encrypted. It is sent to the authentication server as plain text.
The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP. PAP validates users by password. PAP does not encrypt passwords for transmission and is thus considered insecure.) is an authentication protocol in which the user name and password are sent to the remote access server in unencrypted form.
Log in to the dial-in server as superuser. Add authentication options to the /etc/ppp/options file. Sets myserver as the PAP name of the user on the local machine. If the login option is used, the PAP name must be the same as the users UNIX user name in the password database.
Setting Up PAP Authentication (Task Maps) Gather preconfiguration information. Collect user names and other data that is needed for authentication. Update the password database, if necessary. Ensure that all potential callers are in the servers password database. Create the PAP database. Modify the PPP configuration files.
American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) sends the user name and password in clear text. PAP. Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) sends clear text between the user and the server. PAP is the default authentication type.
CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
