Subcutaneous injections can be given straight in at a 90 degree angle or at a 45 degree angle. Give the injection at a 90 degree angle if you can grasp 2 inches of skin between your thumb and first finger. If you can grasp only 1 inch of skin, give the injection at a 45 degree angle.
Upper arms. At least 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) below your shoulder and 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) above your elbow, on the side or back. Outer side of upper thighs. Belly area.
A subcutaneous injection into the fatty layer of tissue (pinched up to give the injection) under the skin. Why are subcutaneous injections given? These injections are given because there is little blood flow to fatty tissue, and the injected medication is generally absorbed more slowly, sometimes over 24 hours.
Pinch a 2-inch fold of skin between your thumb and index finger. Hold the syringe the way you would a pencil or dart. Insert the needle at a 45 to 90 degree angle to the pinched-up skin. The needle should be completely covered by skin.
In line with the sanitary concerns above, diagnoses of skin infections like Abscess and related to skin soft tissue infection (SSTI) are complications of sub-q injection mishandling that can lead to sepsis, amputation, muscle fibrosis, nerve damage or even death.
Hold the syringe like a pencil and quickly insert the needle through the skin. Slowly push the plunger all the way down into the syringe. Release the pinch of skin slowly, then pull the needle out of the skin. Some medicines, like Stelara, come in syringes that automatically cover the needle.
Get the injection site ready. Choose an injection site (place on your body to give the injection) where you can pinch a 1 to 2-inch (2.5 to 5-centimeter) fold of skin. Its best to use one of the following areas (see Figure 1): Your abdomen (belly), except for the 2-inch (5-centimeter) area around your belly button.
