DITA is defined in its specification as an XML-based architecture for authoring, producing, and delivering topic-oriented, information-typed content that can be reused and single-sourced in a variety of ways. Originally developed by IBM in the early 2000s, DITA stands for Darwin Information Typing Architecture.
Information Types DITA provides three base topic types (concept, task, and reference), a number of extended topic types, and the capability to create new topic types through specialization.
Oxygen XML Editor provides a validation function for DITA maps that does more than simply validating that the XML is well-formed. It also does the following: Validates all of the relationships defined in the maps. Validates all of the files that are included in the map.
The Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) specification defines a set of document types for authoring and organizing topic-oriented information, as well as a set of mechanisms for combining, extending, and constraining document types.
Where DITA is a set of organizing principles, XML is the code doing the organizing. Each bit of content receives a tag, such as heading, ordered list, paragraph, etc. These are assigned manually by the writer ing to the rules of DITA, which stipulate which tags can go where.
Create a ditamap Choose File New DITA . Alternatively, choose File New XML. By default, a ditamap is opened in the Resource Manager. You can use the available FrameMaker tools, such as the Structure View and Elements panel, to work with a ditamap. You can also include relationship tables to a ditamap.
Over the years, many firmsprimarily in the software and high tech sectorshave acknowledged that they are using DITA. Software and information technology firms together still comprise the largest single base of core DITA users, making up almost 40 percent of all organizations using DITA (see Figure 1).
Structured content: Authoring tools enable technical writers to create structured content using XML markup. With this structure, information can be organized into hierarchies, making it easier to apply consistent formatting to complex documents.
