Is 300 DPI better than 600 DPI or does it work the other way? It depends, in fact, on what you are printing and what material is used. A higher resolution might be needed for glossy photos or images with lots of details that need to be crisp. Then 600 DPI could be a better option.

600 DPI printing simply means that the printer compresses 600 dots horizontally as well as 600 dots vertically for every square inch of the card. This allows users to print ultra-high resolution pictures, micro-text, OCR codes, and 1D & 2D barcodes.

In case the amount of dots in a square inch is more, the sharper the text or image is. A 1200 DPI for a laser printer is the dots that are printed horizontally and vertically. So, 1200 DPI consumes more toner than 600 DPI.
That same photo scanned at 600 dpi (resulting in a 2400 x 3600 pixel size image) will be about 24 Mb as an uncompressed TIF, 16 Mb as a compressed TIF and only 4 Mb as a print quality JPEG.
