An injection into a vein is called an intravenous injection (IV). You have the injection through a small tube (cannula) put into a vein in one of your arms.
The purpose of intravenous (IV) therapy is to replace fluid and electrolytes, provide medications, and replenish blood volume. The nurses responsibilities in managing IV therapy include the following: assessing an IV site. priming and hanging a primary IV bag.
Injection Point: Injection Points are locations where chemicals, or process additives, are introduced into a process stream.
You always want to inject into a vein and never into an artery. Veins are blood vessels that carry blood from the extremities of the body back to the heart and lungs where it becomes re-oxygenated. Veins have no pulse, and the blood they carry is a deep, dark red because it is low in oxygen.
In veins blood flows at a relatively low pressure compared to oxygenated blood being pumped through arteries at a higher pressure. So, if the artery is punctured with a needle this will lead to a lot of blood loss. So injections are mainly administered through the vein rather than an artery.
Insert the needle into your vein with the needle bevel (opening) facing up, at a 15 to 35 degree angle, and always in the direction of the heart. The more perpendicular the needle is to the injection site, the greater chance you have of sticking the needle through the vein instead of into it.
If an IV is not in a vein, the fluids will collect in the surrounding tissue instead of the bloodstream. This can cause swelling and tissue damage at the injection site. Additionally, the intended medicine or fluids wont docHub the bloodstream, leading to ineffective treatment.
