Personal Identifiable Information (PII) is defined as: Any representation of information that permits the identity of an individual to whom the information applies to be reasonably inferred by either direct or indirect means.
Protecting your PII protects your identity and privacy 1) Use a complete security platform that can also protect your privacy. 2) Use a VPN. 3) Keep a close grip on your Social Security Number. 4) Protect your files. 5) Steer clear of those internet quizzes 6) Be on the lookout for phishing attacks.
Sending PII to other (non SSA/TPM) email addresses If EN employees are using the ENs own or any other non-SSA email system (e.g., Yahoo!, Gmail), they may send email messages transmitting PII only if the PII is entirely contained in an encrypted attachment.
Examples of personally identifiable information (PII) include : Social security number (SSN), passport number, drivers license number, taxpayer identification number, patient identification number, and financial account or credit card number. Personal address and phone number.
Encrypt, pseudonymize, or anonymize PII stored in files in motion, at rest, and wherever possible. This renders the PII completely useless even if perpetrators manage to steal it. Use encryption technology that is strong and widely used. The National Institute for Standards and Technology recommends using AES.
Personal Identifiable Information is prohibited under DoD 5400.11R (Department of Defense Privacy Program). Contact information should only be an organization or office symbol, general address, and phone number (personal home/mobile numbers prohibited).
Secure Sensitive PII in a locked desk drawer, file cabinet, or similar locked enclosure when not in use. When using Sensitive PII, keep it in an area where access is controlled and limited to persons with an official need to know. Avoid faxing Sensitive PII, if at all possible.
