The verb extension defines the \verb LaTeX macro that typesets its argument verbatim (without further processing) in a monospaced (typewriter) font. The first character after the \verb command is used as a delimiter for the argument, which is everything up to the next copy of the delimiter character).
Luckily, its very easy to cross something out in a LaTeX expression. Simply use the \cancel{x} command, where x is whatever you want to cross out.
That is, if you put the command \begin{verbatim} at the beginning of some text and \end{verbatim} at the end, then LATEX will reproduce the text in the output, in typewriter style, exactly as it is typed in the input. Spaces and ends-of-line are copied to the output as well as other special characters.
: in the same words : word for word.
By convention, LaTeX uses the underscore character ( ) to typeset a subscript, such as $ab$ which produces . If you write $abcde$ only the first character, b , is subscript, a b c d e , because LaTeX does not assume you want to subscript the entire set of characters bcde .
The verbatim environment is a paragraph-making environment that gets LaTeX to print exactly what you type in. It turns LaTeX into a typewriter with carriage returns and blanks having the same effect that they would on a typewriter.
The short answer is you use \verb where you need to write a small piece of inline verbatim material that contains characters TeX treats (or rather, is currently treating) as special. \texttt is for when you just want typewriter font. \verb has some downsides, such as not working in moving arguments.
Strikethrough in LaTeX \sout{text to be striked out} for a horizontal line through text to be striked out (exactly like line through). \xout{text to be crossed out} for many short diagonal lines crossing out the letters of the text to be crossed out.
