PGDs can only be used for medicines with a UK marketing authorisation. Medical devices and dressings do not have such authorisations and therefore cannot be supplied or administered under a PGD.
1.4 Examples of medicines which could be supplied using a PGD include: influenza vaccine, oral antivirals and orlistat. providing medicines at NHS expense for those exempt from prescription charges. People who are not exempt from prescription charges would be required to pay the normal prescription charge.
PSDs do not limit those who can supply or administer the medicine. For example, a suitably trained health care assistant can do so, even though they cannot work under a PGD. PSDs are also often used in relation to the administration of vaccinations for named patients as well as Depo-Provera, B12 and Zoladex.
A Patient Specific Direction (PSD) is an instruction to administer a medicine to a list of individually named patients where each patient on the list has been individually assessed by that prescriber.
Patient Group Directions (PGDs) provide a legal framework that allows some registered health professionals to supply and/or administer specified medicines to a pre-defined group of patients, without them having to see a prescriber (such as a doctor or nurse prescriber).
Page 1. Patient Specific Directions. A Patient Specific Direction (PSD) is an instruction to administer a medicine to a list of individually named patients where each patient on the list has been individually assessed by that prescriber.
There is no legally valid period for a PSD for administration of a medicine. The prescriber should include a start and finish date as appropriate within the direction to ensure it is acted on within a time frame following the assessment which is appropriate to the needs of the individual.
A GP can instruct a named practice nurse to supply or administer medicines on his or her behalf. However, medicines may only be administered by a practice nurse if one of three types of instruction is in place: ‐ a signed prescription ‐ a Patient Specific Direction (PSD) ‐ a Patient Group Direction (PGD).
