If the patient presents for a preventive medicine service, the pelvic exam is part of the age and gender appropriate physical exam, as described by CPT codes in the 9938199397 series of codes. However, for a screening pap, the HCPCS code for obtaining the screening pap smear, Q0091 may be used.
CPT Codes 9938199397 (Preventive Medicine Services): If the patient presents for a preventive medicine service, the pelvic exam is considered part of the age and gender-appropriate physical examination, as defined by the CPT codes in the 9938199397 series.
CPT Code 88142 in section: Cytopathology, cervical or vaginal (any reporting system), collected in preservative fluid, automated thin layer preparation.
Cervical Pap test (Z12. 4) Vaginal Pap test (Z12. 72)
Healthcare providers should use the appropriate CPT codes in the 99381-99397 series for the age and gender-appropriate physical exam, along with the HCPCS code Q0091 for obtaining a screening Pap smear. Double billing such as G0101 for the same portion of the examination should be avoided.
PAP 20 is a recycling code/logo indicating that packaging is manufactured using corrugated cardboard. The use of PAP symbols is a requirement of the EU Packaging Waste Directive 94/62/EC. Other PAP codes apply to different paper-based products, including PAP 21 (non-corrugated fibreboard) and PAP 22 (regular paper).
