Open the Family Tree Maker Menu and select Preferences from that list. In the options menu on the General tab, there will be an option to change the Default Location for New Tree File. You can click the Choose option to select the folder that you want to use as the save folder for your files.
To attach a source from the Person Tab: From the People workspace and under the Tree tab (the Family tab in some versions), select the person in your tree to whom you want to attach a source. On the right side of the screen, click the icon to add a New source.
Simplified instructions: Open your tree, then select Compact File from the Tools menu. In the window that appears, click Compact. In the window that appears confirming that compacting was successful, click OK.

How to partially export or split a file in Family Tree Maker for Click on the File menu and choose Export. In the left part of the Export dialog that appears, click Selected individuals. Use the Filter Individuals dialog to compile a list of the individuals that will be included in your exported file.
To merge in a Family Tree Maker File Open the host file in Family Tree Maker. Click File then select Merge from the drop-down. The backup dialog box will open. From the Open dialog box, navigate to and select the file you want to merge into your tree, highlight it, and then click Open. The Merge Wizard will open.
Family Tree Maker is only able to open the following types of genealogical files: Family Tree Maker Files - . ftw, . Personal Ancestral Files - . paf. Gedcom Files - . ged. Master Genealogist Files - . pjc. Ultimate Family Tree Files - . uft. Sierra Generations Files - . uds (Family Tree Maker 2011 only) Legacy Files - .
Include preparer information This option displays whatever you have entered as your User Information. This can be accessed through the Tools menu in the top left-hand area of Family Tree Maker.
From the profile page of a person in your tree, click the Facts tab. In the Sources column, click the Add button and select Add Source. On the Create Source Citation page, enter all the information you have about the source and click Submit.
Steps (website) Sign in to FamilySearch. Navigate to the Family Tree profile of the person. Display the sources or relationship sources: Click Add Source. Click Add New Source or Add New Memory Source. Enter the source information, including the reason to attach a source.
