iamp;#39;m not a hundred percent sure how to pronounce todayamp;#39;s topic motifs motifs mott ifs if the pronunciation of todayamp;#39;s topic is wrong or sounds different from what you were expecting it to be then i apologize luckily this is purely a text-based medium so the pronunciation really doesnamp;#39;t matter i thought we would cover this topic because we talked about themes last week and this topic is closely related to themes it also relates to things like tone and mood but i havenamp;#39;t done a video on either of those things yet so iamp;#39;m just going to pretend like they donamp;#39;t exist so letamp;#39;s talk about motifs what they are what they do and how to incorporate one into your work there are basically two criteria in order for a motif to be a motif first it must be an element that repeats repeatedly throughout the story in some form generally to be recognized as a motif this repeating element needs to be repeated often enough that the reader notices

In order to use a motif, it is important to be aware of what underlying theme or idea is being reflecting by the motif: Identify an important theme. Emphasize this theme by placing a recurring idea, image, or symbol within the composition.
Motifs should be designed from left to right, so that when they are used they are connected in sequence at the start and end points. Generally, the first and last points should be on the left and right of the motif respectively. This is so the motif can be used without it overlapping itself.
Incorporate motifs into your outline Outlining your story can also help with motifs. Look at the main events in your story (this is the plot). Then, take in the big picture (this is the theme). Next, think of recurring elements that you can include in the main events that will point to the big picture.
If your theme is the erosion of ethics and morality, some examples of motifs might be things like clothes that become more and more tattered, or a garden that slowly falls into ruin. You can use physical objects as a motif or a more abstract idea, like decay.
The key to a strong motif is to make sure your idea contains deliberate self-contrast. In other words, you need to be intentional with the ways your motif provides variety across its different parameters (e.g., pitch, rhythm, dynamics, etc.)
An example of a motif in literature might be that every time two characters are in conflict, it is raining outside: the rain becomes figuratively associated with conflict in a clear way.
How to Use Motifs In Your Own Writing Spend some time thinking about the central themes of your story. Write down the themes that come to mind. Looking at each of the themes youve written, jot down any images, words, memories, or events that come to mind for each.
Examples of Motifs The green light in F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby isnt just for ambiance. Its a recurring element, symbolizing Gatsbys elusive dreams and the societal gap between him and Daisy.
