Motifs are recurring images, quotes, or concepts that take on a figurative or symbolic meaning throughout the story. Motifs are used to tie the readers into the story and to help them understand some of the important concepts in a given work. A motif will often come up again and again at important moments in a story.
Protein motifs are small regions of protein three-dimensional structure or amino acid sequence shared among different proteins. They are recognizable regions of protein structure that may (or may not) be defined by a unique chemical or biological function.
Although each of these proteins has unique features, most bind to DNA as homodimers or heterodimers and recognize DNA through one of a small number of structural motifs. The common motifs include the helix-turn-helix, the homeodomain, the leucine zipper, the helix-loop-helix, and zinc fingers of several types.
A motif is a short conserved sequence pattern associated with distinct functions of a protein or DNA. It is often associated with a distinct structural site performing a particular function. A typical motif, such as a Zn-finger motif, is ten to twenty amino acids long.
A matrix of numbers containing scores for each residue or nucleotide at each position of a fixed-length motif. There are two types of weight matrices. A position frequency matrix (PFM) records the position-dependent frequency of each residue or nucleotide.
Sequence motifs are short, recurring patterns in DNA that are presumed to have a biological function. Often they indicate sequence-specific binding sites for proteins such as nucleases and transcription factors (TF).
