Your injecting needle should be long enough to docHub through the subcutaneous fat layer into the muscle (usually 1.25 or 1.5 inch), and a guage between 22g - 25g. Never re-use a needle. IM injections should be done in the vastus lateralis (thigh), or ventrogluteal (hip/butt) muscle.
For a well-developed adult, no more than 3 ml of medication should be administered in a single IM injection because the muscle tissue does not absorb it well in larger volumes.
Large subcutaneous injection volumes are associated with pain. In this sense, the maximum volume generally accepted is around 1.5 ml, although volumes of up to 3 ml are well tolerated when injected in the abdomen.
The upper thigh is a good site if you are doing self- injection of your medication. your thigh, and imagine dividing it into a three by three grid. The injection will go into the outer middle third. alcohol swab; let the skin air dry (do not pat or blow on skin to dry it).
The dorsogluteal is not the preferred site due to its proximity to the sciatic nerve and major blood vessels. If landmarked correctly however, it is safe to use. Up to 4mls can be injected into this site.
The needle for IM injections can be 22-23 Gauge, 1-1.5 inches in length, adjusted for thickness of site. Find a comfortable, well-lit working place and inject at the same time each day.
A volume of drug solution greater than 3 mL causes increased muscle tissue displacement and possible tissue damage. AJNs article states that a 4 mL dose can be administered into a large muscle (gluteus medius). Does the maximum volume that can be administered depend on the injection site and the drug?
