Self-sampling enables women to collect their own sample for cervical screening without a speculum using a vaginal swab or brush. A drawback is the consistent finding that women worry about not self-sampling correctly.
What is a vaginal speculum used for? You'll most likely encounter a speculum during a pelvic exam or Pap smear. During a pelvic exam, your provider gently inserts the duck-billed part of the speculum into your vagina and opens the speculum to widen your vaginal walls.
Your doctor will numb your cervix by injecting it with a numbing medication called lidocaine. You may feel some pressure and slight burning as it's injected. The medication may also make your heart beat a little faster.
Some women find it helpful to use an over-the-counter topical lidocaine gel on the vulvar area to decrease sensation. Other women may even need to ask their clinician for a small dose of anxiety medication to take before arriving to their appointment, if medically appropriate.
What about using a numbing agent? If you've had an IUD inserted, your provider probably used a numbing agent to help reduce pain in your vagina and cervix. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to do the same before a Pap smear. The presence of a numbing agent can obscure your results.
A Pap smear should not hurt but may feel uncomfortable. You could experience light bleeding afterward, but you should not feel pain or cramping. Let your healthcare provider know if you feel discomfort lasting more than a few minutes or if the bleeding lasts longer than 24 hours.
Pap smear screening During a Pap smear, your doctor will insert a small plastic spatula or brush into the vagina to collect cervical cells for testing. A Pap smear can help detect infections, abnormalities and precancerous cells that can lead to cervical cancer.
How painful is the LEEP procedure? You may feel a small pinch or a sensation like a bee sting when your provider injects the lidocaine into your cervix. Or, you may not feel any sensation at all. You may feel internal pressure or slight discomfort when the cells are being removed.
A small electrical wire loop is used to remove abnormal cells from your cervix. LEEP surgery may be performed after abnormal cells are found during a Pap test, colposcopy, or biopsy.
After a LEEP procedure and during the recovery period, doctors recommend restraining from exercise or any form of excessive physical activity for at least 48 hours.
