DITA doesnt have an actual variables element, but you can use keyref to accomplish the same thing. A variable is a symbol that represents something else. You might use the variable productname so that if youre product name switches, you dont have to update all instances of the product name in your documentation.
To insert an image, use the image tag and specify the placement attribute to set line wrapping. You can also choose placement=inline if youre inserting an image in the line of your sentence (such as a button image) or if you want text to flow around your image.

Open the Character Map dialog box by selecting More symbols from the Symbols drop-down menu on the toolbar (if this button is not displayed, right-click in the toolbar area, select Configure Toolbars and chosen to display the Symbols toolbar). Find the symbol and select it.
The symbol for oxygen is O. A symbol for an element is a one or two letter abbreviation for its name. The symbols for all of the elements are found on the periodic table, along with other important information including atomic number and mass.
To edit these comments (or accept/reject changes) right-click the comment or tracked change and select Edit Reference. Tip: To search for references made through a direct content reference, use the Search References action from the contextual menu.
