Initial Enrollment Period is when you can enroll into Medicare for the first time. It starts three months before you turn age sixty-five and lasts for seven months. If you already get benefits from the Social Security Administration or the Railroad Retirement Board, you are automatically entitled to Medicare Part A, Hospital Insurance, and Part B, Medical Insurance, starting the first day of the month that you turn sixty-five. You do not need to do anything to enroll. Your Medicare card will be mailed to you about three months before your sixty-fifth birthday. If you wait until you are sixty-five, or sign up during the last three months of your initial enrollment period, your Medicare Part B start date will be delayed. Please note that a Special Enrollment Period is available if you delayed enrollment in Medicare Part B because you or your spouse had group health coverage through a current employer or union.
