When you create an AMI of an existing EC2 instance, a snapshot is taken for all the volumes that are attached to the instance. The snapshot includes the device mappings. You cant use snapshots to launch a new instance, but you can use them to replace volumes on an existing instance.
An Amazon Machine Image, or AMI, is a template for Amazon EC2 instances, created from an Amazon EC2 instance. AWS provides updated AMIs (with patches, for example) every month; however, AWS Managed Services (AMS) requires AMIs that have been modified for AMS use.
Amazon Machine Images (AWS AMI) offers two types of virtualization: Paravirtual (PV) and Hardware Virtual Machine (HVM). Each solution offers its own advantages.
AMIs are region specific. Though you can copy an AMI from one region to another.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a system that measures, collects, and analyzes the energy usage, and communicates with the metering devices such as electricity meters, gas meters, heat meters, and water meters, either on request or on a schedule.
Each AMI includes a template for the root volume required for a particular type of instance. A typical example might contain an operating system, an application server and applications. Permissions are also controlled to ensure that AMI launches are restricted to the appropriate AWS accounts.

If the filtering process returns one or more Amazon EC2 instances as result, the selected image is currently in use. If the filtering process does not return any EC2 instances, the selected Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is not used anymore and can be safely removed from your AWS cloud account.
