The easiest place to give your pet a shot is in the loose skin just above the shoulder blades.
All injections in meat producing animals should be given in the neck, with the exception of a few specific antibiotics. The injections should be given in a triangular area of the neck that is in front of the shoulder, above the spine, and below the nuchal ligament at the top of the neck.
The hamstrings (muscles at the back of the thigh) should generally be avoided due to the possibility of damage to the important sciatic nerve that runs in this area. Volumes of injection should not be more than 2-6 ml in dogs. Intramuscular injections are more painful than subcutaneous ones.
Learn about the 4 types of injection: intradermal, subcutaneous, intravenous and intramuscular injections, and what they are used for in Singapore.
The four most frequently used types of injection are: Intravenous (IV) injections. An IV injection is the fastest way to inject a medication and involves using a syringe to inject a medication directly into a vein. Intramuscular (IM) injections. Subcutaneous (SC) injections. Intradermal (ID) injections.
Appropriate sites for intramuscular injection are the quadriceps (muscle on the front of the thigh), lumbodorsal muscles (muscles either side of the lumbar spine) or the triceps muscle (behind the humerus (arm bone) in the front leg).
The three main routes are intradermal (ID) injection, subcutaneous (SC) injection and intramuscular (IM) injection. Each type targets a different skin layer: Subcutaneous injections are administered in the fat layer, underneath the skin. Intramuscular injections are delivered into the muscle.
Safety Data Sheets | Safety and Training Resources / School of Veterinary Medicine.
With most pets, the best subcutaneous injection sites are located behind the neck and shoulder blades. For easier injections, grab some of that skin to make a skin tent. Standard size needles recommended are 18 to 20-gauge needle from 1 to 1.5 inches long. Avoid pinching the skin too hard with your fingers.
Injection Placement out after naming the three most common methods: intramuscular (into a muscle), intravenous (into a vein) and subcutaneous (under the skin).
