Transcoding is a digital-to-digital conversion of one type of encoded data (video or audio) to another, often because the target device that will be used to display the content requires a smaller file size.
The amount of quality loss depends on the source and target formats, the compression ratio, and the transcoding algorithm. Generally, the more you compress a video, the lower the quality will be.
Transcoding converts one digital encoding format to another translating the file format, video, and audio in real time. It compresses files as much as possible with minimal quality loss to transfer information with less data, thus maximizing the number of compatible playback devices.
Video encoding for OTT involves the process of converting video content into digital formats suitable for streaming over the internet. The goal is to ensure high-quality video playback while minimizing bandwidth requirements.
Transcoding is the conversion of a digital media file, such as a video or audio file, from one format to another. For example, you might convert a Windows Media file to MP4 so that it can be played on a portable device that supports MP4 format. Or, you might convert a high-definition video file to a lower resolution.
Transcoding typically comes in three types: lossy to lossy, lossless to lossless, and lossless to lossy. Loss in this case refers to the integrity of the data being compressed and transferred across a network.
