A frame within a frame is the use of visual elements in a scene to border a subject, further drawing the focus to them. The first frame is the literal shape and border of the entire image. The second frame is then created within the image, hence the term.
A liner (left) and slip (right). Liners are simply small frames; slips are small, flat unrabbeted strips that are either mitered (ours actually have tiny splines) or lap-joined. They generally have the same appearance in the finished frame, so the difference is a little technical.
INTERNAL FRAMING: The placement of a figure or figures (or other important objects) within boundaries formed by other mise-en-scene elements (sets, objects, other figures, etc.) A composition often referred to as frame within the frame. (See also FRAMING.)
Rebate (or rabbet): The inner cut out lip of a frame (moulding) in which the glass, mount, artwork, and backing are held into the frame by. Rebates are quantified by width and depth sizes. Generally, the rebate width commonly measures between 5-6mm, but the rebate depth varies the most from moulding to moulding.
Camera framing is the placement and position of the subjects in your shots. Shots are all about composition. Rather than pointing the camera at the subject, you need to compose an image.
Inner Frame / Liner Secondary frame inside of another frame. Stacked Frame Frame assembly made of more than one frame.
