Are Medical Expenses Tax Deductible? Yes. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) allows you to deduct certain unreimbursed medical and dental expenses that exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). To claim the deduction, you must itemize when filing your income tax return.
Share: If youre itemizing deductions, the IRS generally allows you a medical expenses deduction if you have unreimbursed expenses that are more than 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income.

You should also keep a statement or itemized invoice showing: What medical care was received. Who received the care. The nature and purpose of any medical expenses. The amount of the other medical expenses.
You can deduct on Schedule A (Form 1040) only the part of your medical and dental expenses that is more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). This publication also explains how to treat impairment-related work expenses and health insurance premiums if you are self-employed.
Medical care expenses must be primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental disability or illness. They dont include expenses that are merely beneficial to general health, such as vitamins or a vacation.
1099 filers can deduct costs for business taxes and licenses. Examples include business licenses, LLC or incorporation fees, and special accreditations. However, do not record your self-employment or income tax. Record tax and license costs on line 23.
Even if youre not planning to deduct your medical expenses, its still a good idea to keep the receipts for those expenses, just in case you have large, unreimbursed medical expenses during the year and decide to deduct your qualified medical expenses.
