hi everyone good Monday morning again from Bay slag you know I just wanted to have a little bit of a primer on chts versus egts this morning because Iamp;#39;ve heard a number of comments Lately from Pilots that leads me to believe that not a real understanding out there of the differences and what you need to do in adjusting each of those so letamp;#39;s talk about it a little bit EGT stands for exhaust gas temperature that tells you whatamp;#39;s going on inside the cylinder okay that is controlled by injectors here Iamp;#39;m going to get into those a little bit here in more depth CHT cylinder head temp is a probe that typically uh goes right into the cylinder head usually theyamp;#39;re underneath or sometimes thereamp;#39;s a spark plug washer on some of the lower end gauges as well go right underneath the spark plug basically what weamp;#39;re doing there is taking a temperature of the cylinder head down here is the cylinder Barrel by the way this is an i o 540 eng

An exhaust gas temperature gauge (EGT gauge or EGT sensor) is a meter used to monitor the exhaust gas temperature of an internal combustion engine in conjunction with a thermocouple-type pyrometer. EGT gauges are found in certain cars and aeroplanes.
The stoichiometric mixture for a gasoline engine is the ideal ratio of air to fuel that burns all fuel with no excess air. For gasoline fuel, the stoichiometric airfuel mixture is about 14.7:1 i.e. for every one gram of fuel, 14.7 grams of air are required.
Mixture settings that are rich of peak EGT provide more power. The airplane flies faster, but the engine burns more fuel and cylinder head temperatures run hotter. Lean of peak EGT settings run cooler, in large part because the engine is developing less power.
When you lean to peak EGT (best economy), youre burning 100% of the fuel that enters your cylinder. Thats as efficient as you can get. But, when you run the engine slightly rich of peak EGT (50 degrees Fahrenheit is common), youre ingesting more fuel into the cylinder than you can burn.
When dealing with a diesel vehicle, your EGT is a critical factor in its performance. Generally speaking, the lower your EGT, the better. At Manta Performance, we recommend that your EGT stay under 550C (as measured at the turbo outlet) to assure your engines safety.
If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
Keeping EGTs below 1,200 degrees is an accepted safe limit for towing. Excessively high EGTs are the result of a rich air/fuel ratio and are typically realized when engines are modified. This doesnt mean a factory engine should be able to pull a grade at full load without experiencing high EGTs.
Leaning mixture using EGT indicator Established on the cruise altitude, set the cruise RPM. Start to lean the mixture monitoring the EGT indicator. The EGT starts to rise, follow leaning it slowly till it the engine docHubes its peak EGT.
Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
Overall, the EGT gauge tells us the temperature of the exhaust gas, which is really an indication of the fuel mixture coming out of the cylinder after the combustion process occurs. A rich mixture, such as during takeoff, will have a much lower EGT than a properly leaned cylinder during cruise.
