Different types of car dents TypeDescriptionMust Know Info About Removal Ding A small area of damage Simple DIY Round dent A circular indentation Can be popped back out Sharp dent Small but deep divots Challenging to repair Crease dent Long fold with paint damage Seek professional repair1 more row Jan 25, 2023
Sharp dents are one of the few dents that most often cannot be removed via paintless dent repair. These dents occur along the body lines of the car and are often deeper than round dents. They are also tighter than round dents, making them harder to repair, especially if they are in a difficult spot.
Measure the dent and check that its no bigger than three inches in diameter and that its shallow, too. If the mark appears on a curve or a contour in the bodywork, a DIY approach probably isnt the best idea. Youll also need to be confident about working on your car and accessing the back of panels.
How to Fix a Dent in a Car Clean the Car and Remove Any Residue. Remove Paint from the Dented Area by Sanding. Start Working on the Dent with a Hammer, Mallet, or Dent Puller. Mix Bondo and Put Down the First Layer of Body Filler. Shape the Filler with a Sanding Block. Smooth Out the Filler with a 180 Grit Abrasive Sheet.
Standard Body Fillers While not appropriate for use on galvanized steel, standard grade fillers are perfect for repairing minor dents and scratches. They sand easily to blend in with the rest of the vehicle once primed and painted. Standard grade also offers the least stain-resistance.
Round Dents Often, these dents come from hail, golf balls, or similar round objects striking your car. Being relatively uniform and large, these dents are easier to fix. Some people even manage to pull out small round dents at home using hot water and a plunger.
Minor dents with a diameter ranging from 3 to 5 inches can be fixed using PDR. Even the more minor door dents and dings with sizes of 2 inches or less and medium dents of 5 to 10 inches long are possible to repair.
