High resolution C1s spectrum showing Carbon-Oxygen and Fluorocarbon bonding states. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a highly surface-specific chemical analytical technique used to probe the elemental composition and bonding states in the outermost 2-10 nm of a solid surface.
The most prevalent electron spectrometer for XPS is the hemispherical electron analyzer. They have high energy resolution and spatial selection of the emitted electrons.
The primary difference between EDS-SEM and Micro-XRF-SEM is the excitation method. EDS-SEM uses electrons to excite the sample, while Micro-XRF-SEM uses X-rays. In both methods, characteristic X-rays are generated by the elements in the sample which are then collected and analyzed by the EDS detector.
Carbon • Non-Metals Primary XPS region: C1s.
How to Analyze XPS Spectra Data The X-Axis: Peak Position. The Y-Axis: Peak Intensity. Overlapping Peaks. More than One Elemental Peak. Analysis of Haze on a Polyimide Substrate. Passivation Integrity of Stainless Steel.
In contrast to SEM/EDS which has a typical analysis depth of 1-3 µm, XPS is a surface analysis technique with a typical analysis depth of less than 5 nm and is therefore better suited for the compositional analysis of ultra-thin layers and thin microscale sample features.
In XPS, the atoms of the sample's surface absorb X-rays and emit electrons, but in XRF the atoms of the sample both absorb and emit X-rays.
XPS Sample Preparation: Press the powder into clean, high purity indium foil. Dissolve the powder in a suitable solvent and then drop cast onto the surface of a clean silicon wafer. Sprinkle the powder onto the surface of sticky carbon conductive tape or pressed into a tablet for analysis.
EDX will only provide an average elemental composition in the volume it analyzes, though that volume is commonly about 1000 to 2000 times smaller. In most cases, XPS analysis samples many particles or many grains in a polycrystalline material, while EDX analysis may sample only one particle or one grain.
First divide by the X-ray flux if you have used different X-ray energies for different spectra (more X-rays will give higher intensity XPS peaks). Then divide by the photoionization cross-section for the core level you're looking at it.
