The CASE statement can be used in the ORDER BY clause as well. In SQL, the ORDER BY clause is used to sort the result in ascending or descending order.
It is possible to use CASE to filter data in the WHERE clause of a SQL query. This can be helpful if you want to restrict records based on logical conditions. Notice we dont alias the CASE statement when using it to filter since it doesnt return a column in the query.
CASE can be used in any statement or clause that allows a valid expression. For example, you can use CASE in statements such as SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE and SET, and in clauses such as , IN, WHERE, ORDER BY, and HAVING.
Here is the basic syntax of a Multiple CASE WHEN statement: SELECT column1, column2, CASE WHEN condition1 THEN result1 WHEN condition2 THEN result2 ELSE defaultresult END AS newcolumn FROM yourtable; This construct proves invaluable in handling scenarios where more than one condition needs consideration.
The SQL WHERE clause is an optional clause that can be used with a SELECT statement. Its purpose is to filter out specific records from a dataset or table.
You use it just as you would use a function, or a formula, to deliver a single value. There is no need for a SELECT, you just SET your variable to a value returned by the case expression.
