While George is the main protagonist of the story (though the same could be argued about Lennie), Of Mice and Men has many other interesting characters despite its short length. These include the antagonist Curley, the farmhands Carlson and Slim, the swampers Candy and Crooks, and Curleys wife.
Symbolism of Dogs in Of Mice and Men The most important is Candys dog, a very old sheepdog that has outlived its usefulness. Although Candy loves his dog very much, Carlson takes the dog and shoots it. Candys dog symbolizes the fate of the weak. Candy fears that he, too, will be killed when he is no longer strong.
The character of George is directly characterized as small and quick, having small, strong hands, slender arms, a thick, and bony nose. Lennie is described in the first chapter as a huge man that walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the where a bear drags his paws. The initial direct characterization
Each of the characters represents a kind of person in American society and often one that is a victim of discrimination. For example, Crooks represents a segment of American society that is discriminated against because of race; Curleys wife, because of gender; Candy, because of old age and physical handicap.
Curley represents the land-owning class in his aggressive dominance and forceful authority around the ranch. Although it is his father who actually owns the ranch, Curley asserts his power through fear, control, and isolating the workers.
Steinbeck describes George as: small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features (2). In contrast, Lennie is depicted as Georges opposite: a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, [and] wide sloping shoulders (2).
Crooks is so named because of a crooked back caused by a kick from a horse. Crooks is the stable hand who takes care of the horses and lives by himself because he is the only black man on the ranch. Along with Candy, Crooks is a character used by Steinbeck to show the effects of discrimination.
Lennie is also associated with rabbits, which are part of his dream (he will get to tend them on the farm) and because they are soft things he likes to pet. Rabbits also symbolize his realization that he is in trouble; if Lennie does a bad thing, George will not let him tend the rabbits.
