DITA uses keys to insert content that may have different values in various circumstances. Keys provide the means for indirect referencing in DITA. This can make it easier to manage and to reuse content. In DITA, keys are defined in maps and can then be reused and referenced throughout the whole structure of the map. Description. The XRef element forms a cross-reference from the location of the XRef to the element to which it points. Unlike Link and the other cross-referencing elements, XRef is empty. The processing system has to generate appropriate cross-reference text for the reader.
To link to another topic or external site inline, you use the xref element. As a general best practice, people say to avoid inline links if possible, but if referring to another topic or page, it might seem odd not to include the link. The topic title will automatically be used as the anchor text for the link. DITA topics have two different types of links. In the body of the topic, you can use the xref element to insert cross reference or inline links. In the related-links part of the topic, you can use the link element to insert links. Related links are also generated from a relationship table when you publish a DITA map.
