How to administer an intramuscular injection Wash your hands. Wash your hands with soap and warm water to prevent potential infection. Gather all the needed supplies. Locate the injection site. Clean the injection site. Prepare the syringe with medication. Self-inject with a syringe. Inject the medication. Remove the needle.
Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC) Center.
As always, thoroughly clean the injection site with alcohol, soap and water, or other disinfectant prior to injection. Slide the needle under your skin at a shallow angle, 15 to 45 at the most. Inject no more than 12 cc of liquid (half of the volume of a 1 cc syringe) to form a little bubble under the skin.
Insert needle at a 90o angle to the skin with a quick thrust. Retain pressure on skin around injection site with thumb and index finger while needle is inserted. Aspiration is not necessary. Multiple injections given in the same extremity should be separated as far as possible (preferably at least 1 apart).
An intramuscular injection delivers medication into a muscle. Doctors frequently use intramuscular injections to administer vaccines and certain other drugs. Injection sites include the upper arm, hip, thigh, and buttocks.
The Safe Injection Practices Coalition (SIPC) is a partnership of healthcare-related organizations led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that was formed to promote safe injection practices in all U.S. healthcare settings.
Safe injection practices include one-time use of needles and syringes and limiting the sharing of medication vials. Unsafe injection practices include: Administration of sedatives and anesthetics for surgical, diagnostic and pain management procedures.
PHE (2013) advised that if you are physically clean and in good general health then swabbing prior to injecting is not required. Where to inject The easiest site when self-administering an IM injection is the middle third of the vastus lateralis muscle of the thigh.
