An allograft comes from a cadaver, often the Achilles tendon. This means there is no second surgical site on your knee or thigh. Yet many surgeons no longer use allografts in young patients. As noted above and elsewhere, allografts are three times more likely to retear than autografts.
After surgery, recovery time usually takes a minimum of 9 months. This includes the initial healing phases postsurgery and physical therapy. Its very important to wait until your ACL reconstruction has healed completely before returning to sports in order to prevent reinjury.
Many recent studies have shown that platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection therapy can be used to stimulate and promote tissue healing and repair which may be effective for ACL injuries.
Bridge-enhanced ACL repair (BEAR) is a new FDA-approved procedure that allows a torn ACL to heal itself and does not require graft tissue to be taken from another part of the body. Duke Health is one of the few centers in the U.S. to offer the BEAR procedure.
Patellar Tendon It attaches from the knee cap to the shin bone. It is the graft with the longest track record and is consider by many to be the gold-standard for ACL reconstruction. In most circumstances this is the graft recommended for professional athletes and in any young active individual.
The BEAR Implant acts as a bridge to help the torn ends of the ACL heal together. The BEAR Implant is designed to hold and protect your blood in the gap between the ACL ends to allow the formation of clot, which is necessary for healing.
Patellar tendon Utilizing a section of the patellar tendon along with a one inch section of bone taken from the patella and a one-inch section of bone taken from the tibia is an autograft that has been used for decades in ACL reconstruction and has a history of long term success.
There are two ways that surgeons can reconstruct the ACL using tissue: from either the athletes own knee, which is called an autograft, or using tissue from a donor, which is called an allograft.
