Neutrophils in the PAP smear are a nonspecific finding, particularly if they are low in numbers or if they are seen in the premenstrual and the menstrual phases. The neutrophils which are adherent to the squamous cells are called cannon balls or pus balls, which are common in the Chlamydia infection.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Infection with HPV that has progressed may cause cervical inflammation, which is usually a later sign of cervical cancer or precancer. It can also be the result of an infection due to other factors that could include: an allergy to spermicide or condom latex. a cervical cap or diaphragm.
A Pap smear is a test to check for cervical cancer. If you have a cervix and are between the ages of 21 and 65, you should have the test every 3 years. The test is performed by inserting a speculum into your vagina and collecting some cells from your cervix that are analyzed at a lab.
Inflammation of the cervix is common and usually does not mean there is a problem. If the Pap smear showed that the inflammation is severe, your doctor may want to find the cause, such as an infection. You may also need to have another Pap smear in six months to see if the inflammation has gone.
If inflammation is present in the cells on the Pap smear, it means that some white blood cells were seen on your Pap smear. Inflammation of the cervix is very common and usually does not mean there is a problem.
In most cases, the presence of abnormal squamous cells does not indicate the presence of cervical cancer. However, abnormal Pap results should always be discussed with a medical professional so that an individualized action plan can be created.
