Of Mice and Men is set during the Great Depression, the decade long economic downturn which began with the Wall Street Crash in 1929. During this time, unemployment was high and many workers had to move frequently to find temporary work.
Slims character brings justice to Of Mice and Men. He is just and fair, but tough and rough at the same time. It is his influence, as Georges friend, that allows him to convince George to be merciful and kill Lennie quickly to save him from Curley.
The historical context of Of Mice and Men centres around the United States of America during the years of the Great Depression.
Of Mice and Men is set in the 1930s against the backdrop of the United States catastrophic economic downturn, known as the Great Depression. Amongst the worst-hit were the agricultural workers of the American West, many of whom were left homeless and wandering for work.
George and Lennie were both born in Auburn. George knew Lennies aunt. Aunt Clara took Lennie in when he was a baby and raised Lennie. Lennie followed George and went along with him after his Aunt Clara died. Both George and Lennie got used to each other and have been together ever since.
The title is taken from Robert Burns poem To a Mouse: The best laid schemes o mice an men / Gang aft agley (The best laid plans of mice and men / Often go awry).
Backstory. Lennies Aunt, Clara, adopted him as a child and took care of him while fulfilling his extra needs. When Aunt Clara died, George was left to care for Lennie. Lennie and George stayed together, doing work around the country.
The novel follows two migrant workers, Lennie and George, as they seek work during the Depression with the goal they share of buying a place of their own where they can be in charge of their own lives. Lennie is not intelligent while George is. They find work on a farm and mix in with the other ranch hands.
