The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP. PAP validates users by password. PAP does not encrypt passwords for transmission and is thus considered insecure.) is an authentication protocol in which the user name and password are sent to the remote access server in unencrypted form.
The PPP authentication protocols are Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) and Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP).
PAP is simple and supported by all network operating systems. CHAP doesnt support very old operating systems. It uses cryptographic hash functions to improve security. Considering the security of authentication, CHAP is more secure than PAP.
CHAP is a stronger authentication method than PAP, because the secret is not transmitted over the link, and because it provides protection against repeated attacks during the life of the link. As a result, if both PAP and CHAP authentication are enabled, CHAP authentication is always performed first.
CHAP, also known as Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol, is a challenge and response authentication method used in Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) servers. The purpose is to verify the identity of a remote user accessing the network. CHAP authentication begins when the user of remote access initiates a PPP link.
PAP (Password Authentication Protocol): An authentication protocol that uses a password. Not the strongest authentication protocol. CHAP (Challenge-Handshake Authentication Protocol): Authenticates a user or network host to an authenticating entity (e.g., an internet service provider). Stronger than PAP.
Setting Up PAP Authentication (Task Maps) Gather preconfiguration information. Collect user names and other data that is needed for authentication. Update the password database, if necessary. Ensure that all potential callers are in the servers password database. Create the PAP database. Modify the PPP configuration files.
The Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) provides a simple method for the peer to establish its identity using a two-way handshake. After the link is established, an ID and password pair is repeatedly sent by the peer to the authenticator until authentication is acknowledged or the connection is terminated.
