this is a really bad time to be figuring out what my arrow setup should be for this phone stupid mosquito but you know better late than never you know so last season i was shooting roughly a 380 grain aero setup for white tail deer that is not very heavy and itamp;#39;s kind of scary my buck last year i only got one long of penetration fortunately i did see the deer fall over and die and i was able to recover it but it was a little scary because i hardly got any penetration so my brother got the ranch fairy arrow test kit he got the uh inserts and field tips he didnamp;#39;t get the arrows because we already shoot both of us shoot gold tip arrows so we decided to go with gold tip for the test but iamp;#39;m thinking about actually getting the full serious archery test kit from serious archery now what iamp;#39;m doing right now is iamp;#39;m trying to tune my bow earlier today i did some paper tuning and i was shooting some of these guys right here and i could not tune the

Typically, the higher the number, the weaker the spine. Common spine ratings are 300, 400, 500 and 600, with 300-spine arrows being the stiffest. Manufacturers recommend which spine should work best for various draw weights, arrow lengths and point weights.

500 spine arrow should be shot for bows from 45 - 55ish depending on tip weight. I know some very good archers who shoot a 500 spine arrow with 300 grains out front on a 50ish pound bow.
The numbers refer to the spine of the arrow. The different spines refer to the stiffness, a 400 spine arrow is generally for bows 40-60 lbs. 350 spine is for bows roughly 55 - 75 lbs, and a 500 spine arrow is for bows roughly 30 - 50 lbs.
For that reason, I would suggest a 500 spine arrow, like the Gold Tip 3555 or equivalent. You could start with a 150 grain tip, and if the arrow is too stiff, you could try a heavier tip or add supplemental weight behind the insert, which GT is designed to do.
We dont have the space to get into all the physics, and there is plenty of dispute among bowhunters on this topic, but without knowing your specifics I would recommend an arrow weighing at least 450 grains (total arrow/broadhead) for elk.
Anything under 800 grains is not too much arrow for a 45# bow.
