Jackamp;#39;s mom and dad just brought him home from a checkup. Jack has some pain, redness, and swelling where he got his shots, all common reactions that will soon go away. His mom is using a cool wet cloth to make him feel better. The doctor gave them some more tips for keeping Jack comfortable, like reducing any fever by giving a non-aspirin pain reliever. She also recommended giving Jack lots of liquid as Jack may eat less than usual for the first 24 hours after vaccination. Jackamp;#39;s dad is reading over some information the doctors gave him which explains other mild side effects that Jack could experience over the next few days. Serious reactions to vaccines are very rare but Jackamp;#39;s parents will call his doctor if they notice anything that concerns them. Sure his parents become a little upset that Jack is uncomfortable after he gets the shots but when they think about the risk of Jack becoming sick from any of the 14 vaccine-preventable diseases, they know itamp;#3

Identify the thickest part of the deltoid muscle by having the person raise their arm to define the muscle. Once defined, have patient relax arm and proceed. Insert needle at a 90o angle to the skin with a quick thrust. Retain pressure on skin around injection site with thumb and index finger while needle is inserted.
There are several possible locations for administering intramuscular injections, including the shoulder, hip, and thigh. People who need to self-administer an injection should ask their doctor for advice and guidance, and familiarize themselves with the process before they inject themselves.
Young Adolescents (Aged 11-18 years) The deltoid muscle is preferred for adolescents 11-18 years of age. The anterolateral thigh can also be used. For injection into the anterolateral thigh, most adolescents will require a 1-1.5-inch needle to ensure intramuscular administration (27).
The most appropriate sites for IM injections are the vastus lateralis (anterolateral thigh) for infants and toddlers and the deltoid muscle for pediatric patients 3 years and older.
The anterolateral aspect of the thigh, or vastus lateralis muscle, is the preferred IM site for neonates and infants. Up to 1ml can be injected into this site in neonates, up to 3mls in children and up to 5mls in adults. This is the preferred site for anaphylaxis management in all ages.
