We can imagine DPI as the number of pixels which would be needed for one inch (2.54 cm) of printed paper. Usually, for a quality print, we need about 300 DPI, meaning that an image the size of an A4 paper should count 2480x3507 pixels.
Look for one with a minimum resolution of 12 megapixels to get more high-quality results. If you want to shoot sports or wildlife stock photos, youll need to invest in a camera with a high burst rate.
Remember, you should never print your images at the same resolution as your screen. These are typically 72 DPI (dots per inch). So you want to aim for anything between 300 and 1,800 DPI when printing.
A 300 DPI image is considered to be a high quality photo for print. More dots = higher quality. PPI stands for pixels per square inch, which are squares of light that fit into an inch on a monitor. A 72 PPI image isnt appropriate for print because it will appear pixelated, like the right side of the image above.
Most businesses consider 600dpi and higher to be a high-resolution image or print. High-resolution images require more memory to store and can take longer to scan.
Index prints are similar to contact sheets in that they conveniently show all the images on one page. The big difference is that they are made from a collection of digital files as opposed to a single roll of film. Images on an index print are often called thumb-nails.
Excellent quality photo prints require a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots per inch). Therefore, an image file should ideally measure at least 1200 pixels by 1800 pixels to print an excellent quality 4x6 print.
So, if you were to put 300 pixels per inch (i.e., 300 PPI) you would have a printed image thats 23.2 x 15.4 inches. If instead, you set it at 150 PPI, then the printed image would be twice the size.
Low Resolution Images Images used on the internet are typically 72 dpi. This is a suitable resolution for websites since it enables a small file size and does not look visibly pixelated on most computer screens. However, images at 72 dpi will ALWAYS look pixelated and low-resolution when printed.
