In this lecture, Im going to show you how you can use index and match to solve complex lookup problems. The thing with INDEX and MATCH is that its not a VLOOKUP, its much better than a VLOOKUP. And you are going to come across situations or youve probably come already across situations where VLOOKUP just wasnt working. It couldnt do the lookup that you wanted, because your lookup problem was too complex. Thats exactly when index and match can come to the rescue. It was difficult for me to start using index and match. Just like a habit, I had to force myself at the beginning to use it until I got the hang of it. Now, what Im going in this lecture is first, to explain to you how index works in easy terms. And then Im going to show you how match works. And then were going to put these together. So, the example I have is list of divisions, apps, revenue, and profits. The aim of our formula is that we want someone to select an app here, so lets say Misty Wash and we want to get

The area number is an optional addition to the reference form that allows the user to specify certain ranges for multiple values. For example, if you want to find the value at a specific row and column intersection within a range, you could enter INDEX ((A3:A:10, A14:D20) 1, 2, 2) into the formula bar.
When youre trying to look up a value based on a single input, you may be able to use a *LOOKUP function. If youre explicitly asked to find the location of a single input, or to look something up using two or more pieces of information, youll need to use the MATCH and/or INDEX functions instead.
VLOOKUP will only work if the lookup value is in the first column. VLOOKUP cannot look to its left. However, INDEX MATCH solves this problem as it performs the lookup both horizontally and vertically. So, it doesnt require the lookup value to be in the first column, it can be anywhere.
=INDEX(array, rownum, [colnum]) The function uses the following arguments: Array (required argument) This is the specified array or range of cells. Rownum (required argument) Denotes the row number of the specified array.
One of the biggest issues with using VLOOKUP is that it uses a static column reference. On the other hand, INDEX MATCH uses a dynamic column reference which means it can lead to fewer errors when moving around columns. This is an advantage that becomes more apparent as you create larger and more complex spreadsheets.
The superior alternative to VLOOKUP is INDEX MATCH. While VLOOKUP works fine in most cases, it tends to reveal flaws when you start using it in large and complex sheets. The INDEX MATCH formula is actually two different functions; INDEX and MATCH. array is range of cells or an array constant.
How to use INDEX MATCH function in Excel The MATCH function searches for the lookup value Japan in the range A2:A10, and returns the number 3, because Japan is third in the lookup array. The row number goes directly to the rownum argument of INDEX instructing it to return a value from that row.
INDEX MATCH is a clever way to perform a two-way lookup in Excel by combining the power of the INDEX and MATCH functions. It is used as a workaround for the limitations of VLOOKUP, and offers great flexibility once you understand how it works.
The INDEX MATCH[1] Formula is the combination of two functions in Excel: INDEX[2] and MATCH[3]. =INDEX() returns the value of a cell in a table based on the column and row number. =MATCH() returns the position of a cell in a row or column.
We have seen that INDEX/MATCH is a lot quicker than XLOOKUP. In this informational index, were taking a gander at a bunch of SKUs from an online business store, alongside the number of deals for each. In segment G weve made an equation that looks for the SKU in section B and takes out the comparing number of deals.
