Shift work takes place during times that exceed the traditional 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule. Shift work may involve morning work (e.g., 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.), night work (e.g., 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.), or a rotating shift schedule that incorporates both.
A work schedule is a plan that outlines the hours and days employees are expected to be on the job. An example of a common work schedule is the traditional 9-to-5, Monday through Friday arrangement. This consists of eight-hour shifts with one hour for lunch, totaling 40 hours per week.
Another common practice of shift work is longer hours over a shorter work week. For example, an employee may work four 10-hour days instead of the traditional five eight-hour days. Shift work is common for almost any business that operates for 10 hours a day or longer.
This includes information related to their working hours, availability required, workweek, weekly schedules, day shifts, overtime work, as well as: A breakdown of start times, end times, breaks, and planned hours of work. Highlight days off especially where rotating shifts are concerned.
In general, clockwise shift rotations should be used (dayeveningnight). Ideally, a rotational schedule should include no more than 3 night shifts in a block, with 3 days of recuperation after the night shift work. In general, 8-hour shifts are preferable to 12-hour shifts.

Communicate clearly: Ensure that schedules are posted in a physical or virtual location thats convenient for all employees.
Sample work schedule template in Word Open a new document. Click on Insert, then click on Table, then click on Insert Table. Find the small box with a choice of rows and columns. Highlight the first row of your table. Go to the next row and enter the days of the week in each of the cells, staring with the second cell.
