A W-2 is a document that employers must send or mail to employees by the end of January. It contains a summary of the income earned and the amount of taxes withheld during the prior tax year. Employees use this statement to fill out their tax returns.
The W-2 is one of the most important tax forms. Unlike many other tax forms, most individual taxpayers wont need to fill this one out themselves. Rather, employers fill out W-2 forms for their employees.
A W-2 tax form shows important information about the income youve earned from your employer, amount of taxes withheld from your paycheck, benefits provided and other information for the year. You use this form to file your federal and state taxes. What is Form W-2?
Employers are required by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to report employees wage and salary information on Form W-2. The amount of federal, state and other income taxes withheld from the employees paycheck during the calendar year is reported on the Form W-2.
Box 1 shows the amount of gross taxable wages an employer paid. These wages include prizes, bonuses, fringe benefits, and salaries. This part of Form W-2 does not include amounts given to retirement plans or other payroll deductions.
This figure includes your regular wages, bonuses, and any taxable fringe benefits (such as education benefits greater than $5,250), rewards and recognition, gifts, taxable moving expenses, as well as the taxable value of group-term life insurance in excess of $50,000 (see box 12, below).
For companies with 250 employees and below, W2 Form filing can be filled out by hand and submitted via mail. For companies above 250, the W2 Form must be done electronically.
Box 1: Details how much you were paid in wages, tips, bonuses and other compensation. Box 2: Shows how much federal income tax was withheld from your pay by your employer. Box 3: Shows much of your pay in Box 1 was subject to Social Security tax. Box 4: Shows how much Social Security tax was withheld from your pay.
An employer sends a W-2 form to employees, which contains a summary of annual income or wages earned and the amount of taxes withheld during the previous tax year. Freelancers, independent contractors, or self-employed people who are not employees typically receive a 1099 form instead of a W-2 form.
Box 1: Wages, Tips, Other Compensation. The amount in Box 1 will generally be the YTD Gross under the Summary section of your final earnings statement, minus any pre-tax deductions such as health/dental/vision insurance, flexible spending accounts and retirement and tax deferred savings plans, etc.
