When citing a passage of scripture, include the abbreviated name of the book, the chapter number, and the verse numbernever a page number. Chapter and verse are separated by a colon. Example: 1 Cor. 13:4, 15:12-19.
Parenthetical Citations: The first time you reference a version of the Bible, in the in-text citations, give the name of the edition (italicized), followed by a comma and the abbreviated book (see back of handout), chapter, and verse. Use a period, not a colon, between the chapter and verse: John 3.16.
Revised on June 16, 2022. To cite the Bible in 7th edition APA Style, use the general book citation format, omitting the author element and listing the specific version used (not just The Bible) as the title. Include a URL if you accessed an online version.
2021. For your in-text citation, you only need to include the title of the Bible in its language of publication, not the translated title as well. Italicize the title. Follow the title with the book and verse of your quotation, separated by a period.
In your Works Cited, include the title of the Bible, the version, and the publication information. Here are some examples for citing print and online editions of the Bible: Zondervan NIV Study Bible (K. L. Barker, Ed.; Full rev. The English Standard Version Bible: Containing the Old and New Testaments with Apocrypha.
For referencing the print version of a religious text, use the following template: Religious work title. (Year). Publisher. Religious work title. ( Year). Website Title. URL. Editor (Ed.). (Year). Religious work title. Publisher.
APA in-text Bible citations When quoting or paraphrasing specific excerpts from the text, use the name/version of the Bible, the year(s) (remember to write the original publication year, a slash, and then the year of the version you are using), the chapter name, the verse, and then the line.
Under the new APA 7th edition guidelines, you need to create a reference list citation for your Bible citations in your theology paper. Prior to APA 7th edition, students didnt need to cite religious work in their APA paper references list, only in-text.
Multiple references in the same citation If citing multiple verses of the the Bible in one in-text citation, list the books in biblical order separated by a comma.
For APA, you include the Bible and date of publication as cited in then the citation information. Quote (King James Version, 1604, as cited in Smith, 2020).
