To create a new spot channel in Photoshop: Select the Menu icon in the Channels palette and select New Spot Channel. If the Channels palette isnt visible, select Window Channels to open it. Select the Color box in the New Spot Channel dialog.
A spot color is a separate ink layer, specifically chosen because the particular color is necessarily pre-created. This is used in branding, where a specific shade of, say, red represents the companys brand.
Photoshop uses three channels for color data: red, green, and blue (RGB). These channels can be very dangerous if not used correctly. If you change the color of one channel, it can completely change the appearance of an image. One of the most powerful things about channels is that they can be used to create masks.
Click on the Color: icon to open the Color Picker. Click on Color Libraries. Choose a library from the Book drop-down menu to find your Pantone swatch. Now you will fill that selection and create its own Spot Channel.
There are Red, Green, and Blue channels. The brighter areas of the color channel contain more color. The darker areas represent less color.
docHub Photoshop is most often used in its RGB color mode for screen display or CMYK color mode for commercial printing, but it can handle spot colors as well. If you are designing an image that must print with one or more spot colors, you can create spot channels in Photoshop to store them.
