One of the most common sizes is 0.6 mm, but 0.2 mm and 0.3 mm are also commonly used.
The typical layout shows a via capture pad size of 0.660 mm, a via size of 0.254 mm, and an inner space and trace of 0.102 mm. With this layout, only one trace can be routed between the vias.
Mechanical vias are made with twist drills, and the minimum drill diameter is 5.9 mils. Drills smaller than 5.9 mils are not practical in a production setting due to their short wear life, high rotational speed requirements, and tendency to break and wander off target.
Generally, the rule of thumb says maximum aspect ratio of 1:10 but since the hole is so small and it needs to be electroplated, the maximum recommended aspect ratio is reduced to 1:8, and as such boards thicker than 1.6mm should not use this via.
Via with a 0.6mm hole and a 1mm solder pad is the most common size that can be fud on most PCBs.
Minimum-sized vias (0.25-0.3 mm) are typically preferred. Smaller epoxy-filled vias require less material; however, depending on board thickness, smaller vias may necessitate laser drilling.
drill is the finished size of the actual hole. diameter is the outer diameter of the copper surrounding the hole. The annular ring of the via will be the (diameter-drill)/2.
