The MOBI format is the old name for Amazons proprietary ebook file format. Today, its called AZW3. Kindle readers and apps read AZW3 files, as well as the earlier AZW format and even older MOBI files.
The mobi file is so much larger because it actually contains several files within: versions for each Kindle format (MOBI7, KF8), as well as an entire copy of the source EPUB file used to create it. These multiple versions are created when an EPUB file is converted into Amazons proprietary mobi format.
Amazon has announced the retirement of its proprietary MOBI file format for eBooks, and a transition to the EPUB format for use on Kindle devices and apps. As of August 2022, you will no longer be able to send the MOBI file format to Kindles or the Kindle app using the Send to Kindle service.
