Documentation Requirements Gifts must be evidenced by a letter signed by the donor, called a gift letter. The gift letter must: specify the actual or the maximum dollar amount of the gift; include the donors statement that no repayment is expected; and.
If you plan on getting gift funds from a friend or family member, youll need a gift letter confirming your relationship to the giver. The letter also must indicate that the money is a gift and that there is no expectation of repayment. Usually, the letter is signed by both interested parties.
Gifting Tax Rule How much can a parent gift for a down payment? The IRS gift tax exclusion is $16,000 per recipient for 2022. For 2023, it will be $17,000. That means both you and your spouse could gift up to $16,000 to your child and their spouse or fiance.

You may also be asked to provide documentation to prove the transfer of the gift into your bank account. This may include asking the donor for a copy of their check or bank account statement.
