- I bring you Cody Wyoming. Welcome, today I have a special episode of Successful Contractor, and its were gonna talk about why you should price each job individually and treat it as its own unique project rather than trying to cookie cutter stuff together and have a per foot price or per square foot price or simplify matters just to make your bidding process simpler. Because in the end youre gonna lose and your customers are gonna be disappointed. The hill behind me, this is what we deal with every day. This is not ideal digging conditions for doing fence. Now, if youre coming to us from other trades, you know those projects Im talking about where theyre just a complete nightmare. This would be the worst of the worst trying to build a fence up this hill. And we do it all the time. If Im gonna do that, the price is gonna be a lot different than if Im on straight flat firm ground. And so well talk about some of that coming up on Successful Contractor. Im Mark Olson, Lou Gibson

Ask the contractor to explain why the price rose so dramatically from the initial estimate. He will likely say something about unexpectedly high expensive labor and materials. Request an itemized invoice, explaining that you do not feel comfortable remitting any payment until you can further examine this issue.
How to Write a Construction Estimate in 8 Steps Review The Scope of The Project. Provide a rough timeline. Determine What Work You Need to Subcontract Out. Put Together an Estimate of The Cost of Materials. Check Out The Competition. Outline Your Terms And Conditions. Make Your Estimate Professional. Submit Your Estimate.
A quote is an offer to do a job for a specified price. Once you accept a quote, the provider cant charge you more than that unless you agree to extra work, or the scope of the job changes while it is underway. Legally, this is known as a variation to your contract.
Its reasonable for home improvement projects to go over the estimate by 5% to 20% of the total project quote. Look at your contract and ask for details from your contractor about price increases.
Customers cannot be charged more than the estimate given without prior written or oral consent. Unfortunately, you might have to work with the other drivers insurance company. They may agree to a specific price but refuse to pay for repairs over that amount.
A contractors estimate should include: Itemized costs of materials. All labor costs. Costs of hiring any subcontractors. Estimated total before taxes and fees. Taxes and fees. Profit and overhead.
Homeowners SHOULD NOT share competing quotes with other prospective contractors in a way of trying to get the other contractor to come down or match the price. This is really frowned upon in the industry, although some may ask to see the other bids.
An estimate is just an estimate, and it can be reasonable for the final cost to be anywhere from 5% to 20% above the estimate. Thats why its always important to stick to your budget and account for a bit of cushion before you begin any project.
