(applause) Youve got medical questions, weve got answers. Its time for the segment we like to call Ask The Doctors. (applause) And this first question comes from Michelle on Youtube. She writes, I was told the BMI chart is somewhat inaccurate as it doesnt take into account muscle mass which is heavier than fat and many other factors. Is there any other weight maintaining/losing test out there that is more accurate? And this is a very astute observation because the BMI, Body Mass Index, is Look, its still used but its not the end all be all. And its just interesting that she asked this question because theres a period of time where I was considered overweight because I had a fair amount of muscle mass. Ashwell explained that BMI does not take into account the distribution of fat around the body. Abdominal fat affects organs like the kidney, liver and heart more severely than fat around the bottom or hips. Waist circumference gives an indication of abdominal fat levels.
BMI is a measurement of relative body weight, not body composition. Because lean mass weighs far more than fat, many adolescent athletes are incorrectly classified as obese based on BMI. Skinfold testing provides a more accurate body assessment than BMI in adolescent athletes.
Research shows that people who are taller, weigh more (have a higher body mass index, or BMI), and have more lean body mass may have heavier organs. Of these factors, some research suggests that height may best correlate with most organ weights; taller people have organs that weigh more and are proportionately bigger.
Your body mass index, or BMI for short, is one way for you and your healthcare team to assess how your weight affects your risk for disease. Its based on your weight without clothes and your height without shoes.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a persons weight in kilograms (or pounds) divided by the square of height in meters (or feet). A high BMI can indicate high body fatness. BMI screens for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual.
BMI is defined as a persons weight divided by the square of a persons height, using the metric units kg/m^2. Metric Units: BMI = Weight[kg] / ( Height[m] x Height[m] ) English Units: 703 x Weight[lb] / ( Height[in] x Height[in] )
Factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle mass can influence the relationship between BMI and body fat. Also, BMI does not distinguish between excess fat, muscle, or bone mass, nor does it provide any indication of the distribution of fat among individuals.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a good indicator for measurements of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) which measures the density of minerals present in the bones using a special scan.
