hey everyone my name is shane sexton im a cyber security instructor and in this video we are going to take a look at pii and privacy so personally identifiable information first off lets define that well its anything that can identify a unique individual or uniquely identify an individual so it could be a single data point like a social security number that really just points to one person or it could be a combination of data points that are enough to uniquely identify someone so maybe a date of birth and an ip address is more than enough for us to say well those correspond to this person and only this person so thats kind of what pii is its just the data or enough data to identify someone uniquely and it is a bit of a challenge because theres lots of laws that protect pii tons of them but at the same time we do need to collect it for business transactions or consumer transactions financial institutions need to collect pii and the list kind of goes on from there so while we do n

Improper disclosure of PII can result in identity theft. Misuse of PII can result in legal liability of the individual. Organizations must report to Congress the status of their PII holdings every: Year.
A last name alone would fall into the second category of PII, linkable information.
Personally identifiable information (PII) is any data that could potentially identify a specific individual. Any information that can be used to distinguish one person from another and can be used to deanonymize previously anonymous data is considered PII.
The loss of PII can result in substantial harm to individuals, including identity theft or other fraudulent use of the information.
The Privacy Act (5 U.S.C. 552a, as amended) can generally be characterized as an omnibus Code of Fair Information Practices that regulates the collection, maintenance, use, and dissemination of personally identifiable information (PII) by Federal Executive Branch Agencies.
This information needs to be protected, because, if compromised, an individual may be put at risk. The compromise of PII can result in embarrassment, inconvenience, reputational harm, financial harm, lower morale, an increased risk to personal security, and identity theft.
At a minimum, Personally Identifiable Information (PII) must be treated as Internal Data, and elements of PII may be classified as Sensitive, Confidential, or High Risk Data. This definition, however, does not supersede University policy on FERPA data.
Organizations that do not protect PII can face penalties, lawsuits, and loss of business. In the US, most states now have laws in place requiring organizations that have had security bdocHubes related to PII to notify potential victims, as does the European Union.
