Were going to start with the absolute basics of how you even just get a page number onto every single page in Word. Then well look at some more advanced topics like how you start your page numbers from a specific page. To follow along, Ive included a sample document down below in the description. Lets check this out. Here I am in Microsoft Word, and I want to add page numbers to this document. To insert page numbers, up on the top tabs, lets click on the insert option. Over on the right-hand side, lets click on page number and here we see several different options. We can insert a page number at the top of the page and here we can left align it, center align it, or right align it, and if I scroll down, we see a number of different options. Add page numbers in Pages on iPad Tap. Make sure Headers or Footers are turned on, then tap More Options at the bottom of the controls. In Document Setup, use two fingers to zoom, then tap the header or footer field where you want the page number to appear. Tap Page Numbers, then tap a numbering style.
On the Insert tab, click the Page Number icon, and then click Page Number. Select a location, and then pick an alignment style. Word automatically numbers every page, except designated title pages. To change the numbering style, select Format and then choose the formatting you want to use.
While there are no absolute rules, there are some common practices for numbering a document that will be physically printed. Start the numbering on a right-hand page so odd numbers (1,3,5) always fall on the right-hand page of a spread and even numbers (2,4,6) are always on the left.
On the Insert tab, click the Page Number icon, and then click Page Number. Select a location, and then pick an alignment style. Word automatically numbers every page, except designated title pages. To change the numbering style, select Format and then choose the formatting you want to use.
Start page numbering later in your document Go to Insert Header or Footer Edit Header or Edit Footer. Select Different First Page. In the header or footer area, you should see a label on the first page that says First Page Header. Select Close Header and Footer or press Esc to exit.
Answer Click on the Insert tab. Click on Page Number in the Header Footer group. Choose the location of page number (usually top of page). ​ The header will open and the page number is inserted. Your name and subsequent page numbers will now appear on all pages of your document.

Youll see a gallery of page number layout options. Check the Include Page Count box just above the gallery. Click the page number layout option you want.
Open the Header Footer Tools by double-clicking inside the header or footer area. Select Design Page Number Format Page Numbers.Try it! Select Insert Page Number. Select where you want the page number to appear. Select the style you like and Word automatically numbers each page for you.
